PlayBall Family Sports and Fun Day

Sunday 12th September saw the launch of the new PlayBall facilities, hosting a Family Sports and Fun Day at The Pavilion Stormont. Thousands of families descended on the grounds of Stormont to participate in a range of free family fun and sporting activities. It was a great day out for everyone, with the sun even making a special appearance to brighten up the day.

The wide range of sports activities that were offered on the day were enjoyed by all participants. The day kicked off with Civil Service Ladies Hockey Club playing against an Ulster Presidents Select team. The match was extremely competitive and enjoyable to watch and with the game ending in a draw, a fair result on the day. The men were up next and with many Irish Senior Internationals on show for the Ulster Presidents, Civil Service were in for a tough test, however the newly promoted team fought well throughout and showed that they were ready for this season's step up to the Premier League.

The sand-dressed pitch hosted the annual PlayBall Schools Sixes tournament, which was divided into senior girls and under-13 boys. Eight teams in total took part in what was a very enjoyable and competitive tournament. Sullivan Upper came out victors in both tournaments and were presented with trophies and vouchers following the event.

The third generation pitches played host to a number of activities on the day, with a hurling demonstration by a local GAA club starting off proceedings on the 7-a-side pitch. A range of sporting zones took place on the 5-a-side pitches and included cricket, soccer, rugby and hockey, where young people were given the opportunity to try out the different sports by taking part in fun activities with the chance of wining prizes. Other sports that were enjoyed on the day included bowling, tennis, squash and volleyball. To cap the day off, a mini-Olympics was keenly contested, where young people had the chance to show off their athletic ability and test their skills in sprint, jump and throw.

After completing the sporting challenges and claiming prizes, the fun didn't stop there. Whether it was braving the heights of the climbing wall, having a bounce on the trampolines or bouncy castle or taking in the talented tricks of Streetwise Circus Show, the kids (and adults) were entertained all day. Cool FM Road Show were on site blasting out all the hits and providing games and prizes to win throughout the day. If this wasn't enough the BBQ, Ice-Cream Van and Fosters Chocolate certainly would have sealed the deal.

Many thanks to all participating teams, officials, coaches, teachers and the entertainers, who made the day a tremendous success. Thanks also to all volunteers from Civil Service sports clubs, who provided activities on the day.
